Kenya Railways Suspends Train Services

Kenya Railways Corporation on Tuesday, July 18, announced that train services in Nairobi will be suspended on Wednesday, July 19 due to planned anti-government protests called by Azimio. 

In a statement, the corporation explained that recent protests resulted in vandalism and attack on passenger trains, risking the lives of those onboard.  

Passengers using the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service trains serving between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West, and Limuru have been asked to seek other means of transport.

The corporation has also suspended SGR services between Nairobi Terminus and Ngong station.  

"We will advise you once normal services resume and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused," read part of the statement.

On Thursday, July 13, the corporation suspended train services along the Syokimau and Lukenya route after suspects attacked the train.

Reportedly, the attack occurred at 11 a.m. when the train ferring 502 pupils was ambushed by suspects throwing stones at them.

The transport industry is on high alert as a section of Kenyans gear for a three-day nationwide protest. Some vehicles have been damaged in various incidents.

In the matatu sector, the Kenya Transporters Associaton (KTA) warned of disruption urging the stakeholders to protect their property.

"It is our responsibility to prioritize the safety and security of our drivers, assets, and cargo during these uncertain times," read part of the statement.

Three Day Protests

The opposition led by the former Prime Minister has announced that protests are on as they push for their demands. 

Some of the issues the opposition wants to be addressed include lower the cost of living, and reforming the electoral commission among others.
