Kenya Power token services and those from the eCitizen services have been restored after hours of interruption.
The Ministry of Interior on Thursday, July 27, announced that all services on eCitizen, a digital platform managing over 5,000 government services, were up and running.
The statement indicated that certain services were disrupted by an attempted cyberattack on the platform using the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) technique.
The Kithure Kindiki-led Ministry, however, insisted that no data was accessed or lost during the incident.
"The attack not only indicates that we are surrounded by malicious actors, both locally and internationally, but also vindicates the government’s relentless pursuit of stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard our Critical Information Infrastructure and data from such threats.
"We wish to inform members of the public that our technical teams are progressively reviewing the existing protective security controls in a deliberate effort to remain several steps ahead of agents of crime, whose intention is to detract us from the milestones we have made in the digital space," read the statement in part.
The Ministry further explained that the technique used by the hackers involved flooding the target system with massive traffic from multiple sources simultaneously.
Consequently, the platform was overloaded and rendered unavailable to genuine users thereby causing interference of the services.
Kenya Power, on the other hand, revealed that its token purchasing system had been restored after its customers complained of difficulties in making purchases for hours.
"Customers can now purchase tokens through M-Pesa and access other services" read the statement in part.
Kenyans.co.ke had earlier reported that a group of hackers operating under the pseudonym 'Anonymous Sudan' claimed that they had taken over key digital platforms operated by the state agencies including; eCitizen, Kenya Power and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The group insisted that the hacks were part of their retaliation against Kenya over alleged interference in Sudan's internal affairs.
