A night fire razed down a dormitory housing over 200 students in Ndururi High School  on Thursday, July 27, leaving them stranded.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a first responder from Emergency Plus medical services confirmed that there were no fatalities from the incident.

“There were no serious injuries, two victims were sent to Nyahururu CRH but another had to be transferred to Ol Jabet hospital in Nyahururu town," the source remarked.

According to the responder, some learners lost consciousness as a result of smoke and shock and were treated.

According to the Director of Education in Nyahururu Sub County Samson Mburugo, the fire started a few minutes to 9pm while students were still in class and razed down the building.

“The principal and deputy principal informed the Nyahururu OCS and other first responders, when the fire broke out. Fire brigades made their way to the school from Laikipia and Ol Kalou and tried to contain the fire. Unfortunately, students have lost a lot of valuables,” the sub-county director remarked.

Mburugo thanked the stakeholders for their assistance adding that the institution together with the county administration were working to ensure they establish the cause of the fire.

Ndururi High School has since sent messages to parents informing them of the incident at the school.

“The fire started when students were in their classes for evening preps and therefore there was no injury though nothing was salvaged. Investigation on the cause of the fire is ongoing and further information will be made available to you,” The message read in part.

The board of Ndururi High School held an emergency meeting on Friday, July 28, to determine the way forward for the school. The BOM resolved to close the school indefinitely to enable the children to recover from trauma. The information was shared with all parents.

In a similar case, on Saturday, July 22, fire engulfed a dormitory at St. Mary’s Girls Thigio Secondary School in Kiambu County leaving over 90 students stranded.

Two schools in Western were also burnt down at almost the same time on the night of Sunday, April 9.

The fires gutted buildings at St Peter’s Boys High School in Mumias, Kakamega County and the others at Kivaywa Boys High School, also located in Kakamega County.
