The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyan women against using a product known as Yoni Pearls, also referred to as vaginal detox pearls, herbal tampons, cleansing pearls, or vaginal pearls.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke the agency emphasised that Yoni Pearls have not been registered or authorised for use in Kenya in line with the Pharmacy and Poisons Act (Cap 244).

The board affirmed that Yoni Pearls can have harmful side effects on users, making it crucial for the public to steer clear of the product.

“The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) cannot guarantee their quality, safety or efficacy of Yoni Pearls,” read a statement by the PPB.

What Are Yoni Pearls

Yoni pearls are small, natural, and herbal balls used by women to maintain vaginal health.

The herbal products are often promoted as a natural and holistic solution for cleansing or detoxifying the vagina or uterus, claiming to eliminate "toxins, past sexual partners, and hormonal imbalances."

Unfortunately, this product has become a target for unscrupulous merchants who produce substandard and ineffective versions of Yoni Pearls solely for profit.

Given these concerns, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has banned the distribution, supply, sale, or usage of Yoni Pearls, along with any other unregistered products making similar claims.

The public was urged to play an active role in safeguarding their health by reporting any pharmacists involved in the sale of Yoni Pearls or similar unregistered products to the appropriate authorities.

This advisory follows a rising number of complaints from women who have experienced vaginal infections after using Yoni Pearls.

Due to deceptive marketing practices, women have been led to believe that Yoni Pearls help to contain vaginal infections. However, after using the product, the results are very different.

Aside from the vaginal infections, Kenyan women have also reported contracting yeast infections, and bacterial vaginosis.

The retail price of a single pack of Yoni Pearls, that contains three pieces, goes for an average price of Ksh 650 or higher depending on the store.

How They Are Used

They are inserted into the vagina for a short period, typically a few days, to help cleanse and detoxify the area. The pearls work by drawing out toxins and promoting blood circulation.

Women may use yoni pearls to address issues like odour, discomfort, and irregular periods.

However, women are often advised to consult doctors before trying them, as their effectiveness and safety may vary for each individual.
