Maara Member of Parliament, Kareke Mbiuki has come to the rescue of a 15-year-old girl who had been forcibly married to a 19-year-old man in Chogoria, Tharaka Nithi County.
The MP ordered the arrest of the young man on Thursday, August 24, and reunited the girl with her family.
Through his aides, Kareke Mbiuki assured her family members that he would be financing the girl's high school education.
“We have spoken to the OCS Chogoria and also children officers in Maara sub-county to ensure the child is taken home and undergoes counseling before schools reopen,” Bosco Mugo, the MP aide stated.
Bosco assured residents of Chogoria that the member of parliament is invested in seeing that the young girl receives all the help she needs, requesting other constituents with issues that need the MP's intervention to seek help.
The young girl is set to join a boarding school on Monday, August 28. This is meant to keep her away from home and help her concentrate on her education.
The police told local media that they will hold the young man as they carry out more investigations into the incident.
Accompanied by her family members and concerned neighbours, the young girl shared that she was traumatised by the ordeal and would like to get a good education.
“I am very happy that I have been rescued and I am grateful that now I will go to a better school and get a better education so that I can help others too,” the 15 year old noted.
The police brought the young girl in for questioning at the Chogoria police station, where she recorded a statement.
The mother of the young girl expressed her gratitude to the Member of Parliament noting that their efforts to rescue the girl were stemmed by the young man.
“We are very glad that our child is back because I believe she is one of the brightest children in my family. I am now very grateful to God because she has found help,” Gatwiri Mugambi, mother of the kid noted.
