The gates of Nyamira County Assembly were on Tuesday found barricaded with bricks and faeces, just hours before Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were set to table an impeachment motion against the Governor Amos Nyaribo.

A source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on condition of anonymity indicated that the raw sewage had been poured at the entrance on Monday night.

However, the source could not independently confirm the claims circulating online that Nyaribo's supporters were responsible for the incident.

To prevent the escalation of chaos in the County, police officers were deployed to the assembly in scores to man the gates.

The officers ensured the safe access of the MCAs who were scheduled to debate the impeachment motion.

Moreover, they supervised the cleanup of the area and the removal of the barricading blocks at the gate.

Despite the substantial police presence, a small group of youths on motorbikes conducted a peaceful protest against the intended impeachment of the second-term governor.

Last Thursday, 24 out of 34 MCAs from Nyamira County appended their signatures on a motion to impeach the governor.

The impeachment exercise is led by Nyamira Township MCA Duke Masira who accused the governor of laxity and under-performance

“We want to know why Nyamira town gets dark like a remote village at night yet there is money for development of street lights,” he explained as one of the grounds for impeachment.

Masira added that the governor had run down health facilities in the region remarking that only paracetamol was available in most public hospitals.

Religious leaders drawn from the county have unsuccessfully tried to mediate between the governor and the MCAs.

Should todays impeachment motion pass, the Senate will then either form a committee of 11 members to investigate claims made against the governor or try him through the plenary route.
