Nairobi City Hall Staff were surprised after finding a 1-year-old girl abandoned in the basement parking lot of the building.

The baby, who was well dressed, was discovered by cleaners who were undertaking their daily tasks early Thursday morning.

Appalled by the incident, the cleaners alerted security officers, who combed the area for more clues before reporting the case at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre Police Station.

Hours later, the security officers and cleaners handed over the infant to the county's customer service department.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Communications Director & Protocol at Nairobi County Government, Lydia Gatheru, confirmed receiving the abandoned baby, after which she contacted the Social Services department to take over the matter.

''Our security and the cleaner that found her brought this baby to my office. We took a step by contacting the Social Services Department,'' stated Gatheru.

She confirmed that the Social Services department assumed responsibility and promised to establish the identity of the guardian.

The officer would also seek to understand why the child was dumped at City Hall and how she accessed the premises.

Gatheru further acknowledged the efforts of the city hall staff who rescued the baby and took decisive action to guarantee her safety and well-being.

In the event the child's mother or guardian fails to show up to claim the baby within one year, the Social Services department will initiate an adoption process.

Nonetheless, they may also be apprehended and arraigned in court to face charges under Section 20 of the Children Act.

The Act stipulates that whoever neglects his or her child risks up to 12 months in jail, a Ksh50,000 fine, or both if found guilty.
