Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturers on Wednesday staged a strike in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) over delayed salaries.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the lecturers could be heard furiously shouting as they marched around the varsity compound.
While venting their frustrations, the teachers demanded immediate disbursement of their dues.
According to the protesting lecturers, they are yet to be paid their September salaries with October nearing homestretch.
“We want to know where they took this money that the govt gave them for September salary,” one of the protesting lecturers could be heard saying.
The lecturers accused the institution management of allegedly redirecting the money to pay the institution's debts.
According to one of the staff members, the government had already disbursed capitation for the month of September to all universities, and TUK was not an exception.
“Let nobody cheat you that the government has not released capitation, I am aware that last month the government released double capitation for all public universities,” the staff member said.
“Now they are waiting for October capitation and if we are not careful, we will be in this hole forever.”
Initially, the lecturers had threatened to withhold students' results over the pay delays but have now resolved to demonstrations to vent their frustrations.
The protests come barely two months before a graduation ceremony for both Degree and Diploma students.
TUK had already issued a notice to all graduands, notifying them of the requirements needed before the graduation slated for December 19.
