A resident of Kabonge village in Kirinyaga County mysteriously lost his vehicle, which he had parked in his compound on Friday night.
According to a police OB filed under 3/27/10/23, the incident occurred after the motorist returned to his residence at 1:00 a.m. and parked his white Toyota Succeed within his compound.
He retired to bed, anticipating using the vehicle for his morning commute to work.
However, to his shock and dismay, he discovered that his vehicle had disappeared when he woke up at 6:30 a.m.
The motorist couldn't fathom how his vehicle could vanish from his property, especially given that his residence was located only meters away from the Kabonge Police Station.
He was also perturbed by how the thieves managed to disarm the vehicle's security systems silently.
"On Friday, at about 6:30 a.m., he found the said vehicle missing. The matter was reported at Kabonge Police Station. Scene visited by police but no recovery nor arrest made," read part of the police report.
Numerous motorists have reported car theft incidents, often occurring overnight and catching vehicle owners by surprise.
Peter Murima, Chairman of the Kenya Association of Motorists, in a past interview with Kenyans.co.ke, suggested that car theft syndicates often work in cahoots with mechanics responsible for installing vehicle trackers.
To prevent such incidents from occurring, he advised car owners to install three different anti-theft devices from different providers.
According to the latest data from the National Police Service (NPS), a total of 14,714 theft cases were reported in 2022 as compared to 11,762 in 2021.
On the other hand, robbery cases stood at 3,125 in 2022, as compared to 2,456 in 2021.
According to the report, Nairobi, Kiambu, and Meru recorded the highest crimes at 9.7, 8.9 and 6.5 per cent respectively.
Samburu, Isiolo, Kiambu and Kajiado also recorded a significant increase in crime rate during the same period.
