Residents from Mt Elgon constituency in Bungoma County on Tuesday protested after a 31-year-old man was shot dead by a forest guard.
The residents condemned the act arguing that there has been tension between the locals and the officers.
According to reports, the man was shot on Monday morning and moments later, his body was found lying on the ground.
"We heard gunshots in the morning but we did not know what had happened. At around 8 am we were informed that one of our own was shot dead by the guards without a reason," one resident narrated.
It was however not revealed why the man was killed.
The resident argued that if the deceased had committed an offense, it was only fair to take the right legal action rather than kill the man.
They complained that the guards had been harassing them in the past months. Earlier, the guards reportedly raided homes and arrested some residents.
Locals argued that the guards were accusing them of occupying the land illegally, an allegation the residents refuted.
Residents questioned why the man was killed yet he had not damaged any forest property.
"He has left his family heartbroken. He was a young man with great potential now he is gone," one resident stated.
Following the incident, the locals issued an ultimatum to the forest guards to stop the conflict or face the consequences.
