Kericho Senator and  Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has proposed making changes at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) ahead of the fuel prices review for the month of November 14, 2023.

The legislator proposed that the time of announcement of the fuel prices be changed to avoid anxiety among citizens.

''We may even have to legislate the time by which they are to speak, to keep us a bit calmer,'' Chiruiyot stated.

The legislator stated that the pending announcement by the EPRA has been the most awaited by Kenyans in history.

''We've never awaited EPRA's monthly price release as we have to do lately,'' the senator noted

EPRA which reviews fuel prices every 14th day of the month does not have a definite time, having in the past even released the new rates some minutes to midnight.

In the last announcement on October 14, EPRA announced new fuel prices at 3 p.m. while the September announcement was made at 10 p.m.

In their last review, the regulation authority raised the price of petrol to Ksh 217.36 per litre, marking an increase of Ksh 5.72.

Diesel prices rose by Ksh 4.48 to Ksh 205.487 while kerosene prices were reviewed upwards by Ksh 2.45.

The hikes according to EPRA were due to an increase in the average landing cost of imported fuel noting an increase of 3.93 per cent for petrol, 7.07 per cent for diesel, and 5.01 per cent for kerosene.

Energy CS David Chirchir recently hinted that petrol prices may hit an all-time high of Ksh 300 if the Israel- Hamas war escalates.

"I read an article in the Financial Times the other day that because of the Hamas and Israeli War, the international prices could go up to USD150 and that would literally mean our products going to a high of Ksh300 at the pump," CS Chirchir told National Dialogue Committee.
