The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has closed a major road in Malindi County and further warned motorists against accessing it at night.

According to KeNHA, Cheredende - Bura - Hola - Malindi Road was washed away by floods following the heavy rainfall.

"Motorists are advised to exercise caution and avoid traveling at night, do not drive on off-road pathways and resist from crossing moving sheet water," read part of the statement.

KeNHA further assured Kenyans that it was working to ensure normalcy was restored on the affected roads.

The closed section of the road includes 42 kilometres from Madogo Junction and six kilometres from Cheredende Town.

Heavy rainfall being experienced nationwide has hindered movement on major roads, especially across the coastal towns.

Among the areas affected the most is the Ukunda - Lunga Lunga Road, where the Perani bridge had overflowed.

KeNHA warned that the overflowing was caused by the rupture in river Perani, rendering the road impassable.

As heavy rainfall persists in most parts of the country, Kenyans were advised to relocate to higher grounds and limit movements.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reiterated its advice for kenyans to refrain from consuming untreated water, as it anticipates a potential outbreak of diseases during the rainy season.

"It's essential to treat drinking water before use and ensure food hygiene to prevent contamination."

"The public should also avoid crossing swollen rivers and relocate from high-risk areas prone to landslides and flood," read part of the advisory.
