Moja Expressway has refuted claims that sections of the Nairobi Expressway are developing cracks, risking the lives of the road users.

On the morning of Wednesday, a poster mimicking those from Nation Media group began making rounds on social media, purporting to expose a crack in one of the highway's pillars.

Kenyans.co.ke contacted Jeanne May, the Moja Expressway Head of Public Relations, who emphatically stated that the poster was fake, alarming and misleading.

The fake poster dated November 28 bore Nation Media's distinct gold-yellow colour intertwined with cherry red, denoting a breaking news announcement.

"The Nairobi Expressway Co asks motorists to use alternative means after cracks start to appear on the expressway," read a text on the poster.

May, however, revealed that the logo on the poster did not match that used by the media house in all its other graphics.

Nation Media Group, which runs Nation Online, also quickly classified the poster as fake, clarifying that it had not emanated from its newsroom.

"Please be advised that this card doing rounds on social media is fake," read the fake news alert from the outlet.

On the contrary, motorists were spotted using the elevated highway as usual with the latest data indicating that it recorded an uptick in traffic.

As of October this year, it was estimated that the daily traffic on the highway had recorded a 40 per cent increase to top 70,000 vehicles every day.

“Currently, daily traffic of vehicles is ranging between 65,000 and 70,000. This has come up from an average of 50,000 vehicles by February when we celebrated the milestone of 10 million users,” May stated at the time.

It is estimated that travellers spend only 20 minutes on the 27-kilometre stretch that starts from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Road in Westlands.
