President William Ruto on Tuesday invited Mutinda Mutuku, a Grade One pupil at Kiambani Primary School in Makueni County, to State House, two weeks after they met at a tree planting event in Makueni.

In a statement, the pupil was invited to monitor whether trees are been planted in Nairobi in line with the President's clarion call of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

To commemorate the invite, Ruto took Mutuku to plant a tree beside one planted by King Charles III.

The head of state further lauded Mutuku for championing the efforts to improve the forest cover and tackle the effects of Climate Change.

"I'm very proud of Mutinda and his young friends and feel encouraged by the commitment shown by our country's young people to make Kenya a green country for the benefit of present and future generations. They may be young and tiny, but they are a brave and indomitable Green Army," he stated.

"I encourage our young people to make time during the school holidays to plant trees because there is enough rain," Ruto added.

On his part, Mutuku gave the president a report on the status of the trees, explaining that they were growing as a result of the ongoing heavy rains.

He also promised to watch the trees planted in Kiu during the national tree-planting exercise.

Since taking office, Ruto's administration took on a bold initiative to transition to 100 per cent green energy by 2030.

The environmental plan, according to Ruto, would help mitigate climate effects and subsequently tackle food security in the country.

Recently, Ruto met with other Heads of State in Tanzania in a bid to champion sustainable Climate Change policies affecting the continent. During the Summit, Ruto explained that Africa must devise innovative measures to achieve global green industrialisation.

“If there is one thing we should achieve at COP28 is climate financing through climate investment,” Ruto stated.

Tanzania's head of state, Samia Suluhu, on her end, urged African presidents to depend on local resources to fund Climate Change policies rather than rely on those provided by foreign powers.

Rutot is set to attend the COP28 Summit to be held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
