Lawyers in Nakuru stagged protests outside Nakuru Law Courts on Monday, expressing dissatisfaction with what they deemed unfair treatment and restricted access to the premises.

Drawn from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the lawyers demanded an audience with the presiding judge, Fatuma Sichale.

They further threatened to destroy the gate or lock it with their padlock to minimise movement if their wishes were not guaranteed.

Gordon Ogola, who was leading the protests, emphasised that lawyers should have unrestricted rights to access courtrooms.

''Tell the head of the station, that is the Judge of the Court of Appeal who is heading this station, that unless they come and we talk with them, and we agree, we are taking the action that we threatened to take.

The court premises had remained locked since, with access limited to judges, staff prison officers and prisoners.

In their argument, the lawyers insisted that other staff should not be given priority over them as they were not officers of the court.

The lawyers later forcefully accessed the Cutt premises, interrupting a session led by Justice David Nderitu.

While responding to the issue, LSK President Eric Theuri stated that he had already presented the grievances to the Judiciary leadership.

''We have raised this issue with the top leadership of the Judiciary. Advocates cannot pose a security threat to the Court.

"There must be consultation & consensus before decisions are made," Theuri stated, but did not confirm whether the Judiciary, led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, had responded to his prayers.
