The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has cautioned Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) candidates and their parents against falling prey to swindlers.
In a statement on Monday, the examiner announced that it had gotten wind of fraudsters using text messages to scam the candidates who are anxiously awaiting the national exam results.
The swindlers claim that they possess the power to alter an individual's grade to match their choice at a price of Ksh9,000.
"Hallo (sic), send 9k ya registration nikufanyie mpango upgrading ya KCSE inaendelea saa hii. NB requirements random num 'school code, index num ya strong student and weak students. Call tuongee," read the illogical call to action.
Loosely decoded, the composer of the message asked recipients to send him the money and forward the school code as well as the index numbers of strong and weak students.
The swindler further added their mobile money contacts with clear instructions to targeted individuals to call them for more information.
Branding the message as fake, KNEC indicated that no individual possessed the power to alter the grade of a learner in the yet-to-be-released national examination results.
"Do not fall prey to fraudsters purporting to be able to adjust KCSE scores. Absolutely no one can influence the scores of any national examination," read the statement in part.
The correction comes days after KNEC on Friday dismissed reports purporting that KCSE results would be released before Christmas.
KNEC flagged the online publication that claimed the KCSE results would be released between December 16 and December 22.
"KNEC has made no such statement. Marking of KCSE is ongoing and the results will be released when they are ready," the Council clarified.
The KCSE exams kicked off on October 10 and ended on Friday, November 24 with physics practicals with a total of 903,260 candidates sitting for the exams.
