A truck driver was arrested on Monday, by Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) officers on Thika Road while on the run after he allegedly rammed into a 14-seater matatu at Kibirigwi Kirinyaga County, killing two passengers on the spot earlier during the day.
Several people were injured in the accident, but the number is yet to be confirmed
The driver reportedly escaped the scene of the crash and drove towards Nairobi.
He was arrested by the KENHA patrol team at Kenyatta Road along the Thika Superhighway.
Current reports indicate that the vehicle is currently being held at the Juja Police Station.
The truck driver, who is reported to be of Tanzanian nationality is being held in police custody to facilitate further investigations into the case.
The stretch in Kibirigwi along the Sagana Highway has been identified to be a dangerous spot and the Kenya Police Service declared the area an accident blackspot.
In the past few years, a series of accidents have been reported in the Kibirigwi Sagana Road section, leading to frequent loss of life.
In April 2023, 8 people were injured after a canter collided with a matatu in the area.
Additionally, another accident was recorded in the same stretch in February 2023. However, no one was killed in this incident.
Police have launched investigations into the case and the truck driver is still in police custody.
