A report by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has specified select Kenyans who enjoy a 50 per cent discount on energy charge rates.
In its 2023 annual report, the authority highlighted that the Time of Use (ToU) tariff applies during off-peak hours and targets commercial and industrial users.
According to EPRA, the main aim of the tariff is to encourage these firms to use electricity when the demand is low such as at night hours and the weekends.
EPRA noted that the discount is applied every weekday from 10 pm to 6 am.
On Saturdays, the discount applies from 2 pm to Sunday 6 am. The tariff is also applied for the whole day on Sunday and the Public Holidays.
However, the firms have to meet a certain threshold before getting the discount.
"The ToU tariff targets commercial and industrial consumers with the aim of incentivizing them to consume electricity during off-peak hours.
"It provides for a 50% discount on the energy charge rates during the off-peak periods (2200hrs to 0600hrs during weekdays, 1400hrs to 0800hrs on Saturdays and the whole day on Sundays and during Public Holidays) on premises where electricity consumption thresholds are met," read the report in part.
Additionally, EPRA indicated that the tariff was saving companies billions in electricity costs.
Through the discount, Companies saved Ksh1.26 billion between July 2023 to June 2023.
According to the records by EPRA, over 1,000 firms were benefitting from the discount for the first six months in 2023. Only April registered the lowest beneficiaries at 777.
The highest number of beneficiaries was registered in May 2023 at 1,847 followed by January at 1,710 beneficiaries.
