The Atheists in Kenya Society president Harrison Mumia on Tuesday spoke about the group's intentions to table a proposal calling for a two-year renewable marriage contract.

In a statement, the association explained that the contract will lay out the marital duties for each of the parties.

Through the contract, each partner shall commit to the other for two years after which the contract can be renewed, terms adjusted, or the marriage dissolved.

"The Atheists In Kenya Society is of the view that it’s time to rethink the ‘until death do us part," read part of the statement.

According to the association, parties involved in the marriage will have the responsibility for defining their goals and expectations in a renewable marriage contract for a happy union.

Additionally, with the contract, couples will be spared from the tedious and expensive divorces that leave involved parties with psychological trauma.

The association's president in 2023, called upon President William Ruto to adopt the one-child policy to reduce the rising cases of unemployment in the country.

He pointed out that a large number of Kenyans were born outside marriage. Mumia explained that this could be avoided if the one-child policy was implemented.

Mumia added that the government could use the extra finances to boost the economy and channel it to development projects.

"Too many births in Kenya is one reason why we are experiencing economic hardships and cultural backwardness. The population should be controlled to combat poverty in Kenya," he remarked.

Other proposals to streamline marriages include a bill by Suna West Member of Parliament Francis Masara, the Marriage (Amendment) Bill,  2023.

The bill seeks to reduce the time it takes to divorce to save the involved party from unnecessary expenses. It calls for mutual consent to terminate a marriage.
