Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday offered a young pupil depicted holding an umbrella for him in a viral photo, full scholarship for his education.

While narrating the circumstances leading to the occurrence,  CS Machogu disclosed that the young boy approached him on Monday January 15 during a bursary issuance ceremony held at the Mumbi Stadium in Murang'a County during which the youngster offered to hold the umbrella for him.

"That small guy insisted on being beside me until I said okay here is something for you,"  Machogu disclosed on Wednesday during an education event organised by a local bank.

However, after the photo went viral, CS Machogu was widely criticised by Kenyans across the board who questioned whether the action was appropriate.

The CS, however, has now disclosed that he later met the pupil and offered him full sponsorship for his education since he comes from a humble background.

"I was able to consult with him, and helped him the way he wanted because he comes from a background that you and I don't come from,” Machogu revealed.

The CS further noted he also bought a pair of shoes and school uniform for the pupil.

"Sometimes when you go to places as public figures, you get these needy children, they want to reach the PS, let the PS stand and let the child come and get help as required."

While addressing education stakeholders, Machogu advised fellow leaders to go out of their way and offer to help especially when approached by needy children.

“If you see a child come with an umbrella , just know the boy wants school fees or uniform or even shoes," the CS denoted.

While speaking during the event, the CS also noted the Ministry was working to ensure the form one admission process is seamless, further reiterating that school fees in public schools remain unchanged.

"We have enough capacity in all our schools for Form Ones to join. Principals are well advised on school fees," Machogu noted.
