A total of 9,355 Kenyans are battling to fill a handful of office assistant jobs advertised by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).

In a notice carried in local dailies on Tuesday, the ODPP revealed that it had announced 20 office assistant vacancies as part of the 186 agency-wide recruitment drive but received overwhelming applications.

After an assessment of the applicants, the agency shortlisted only 155 individuals, representing 1.6 per cent of the total applicants. The position was ranked the lowest of the total advertised positions.

In general, ODPP, through a Gazette Notice running till December 5, 2023, advertised 186 vacancies but announced that it received a total of 33,272 applications.

Clerical Officer II attracted the most applications at 11,947 individuals looking to fill 30 positions. However, only 150 people were shortlisted.

Other positions included Senior Assistant Director of Human Resource Management, Assistant Director of Information Communication Technology, Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel, Principal Office Administrator, Executive Secretary and Personal Secretary among others.

Assistant Director of Information Communication Technology, which sought to fill one position, received the least applications at 61 while only 4 were shortlisted.

In general, only 917 individuals of the over 33,000 applications were shortlisted.

The spike in the number of applications exposes a higher unemployment rate across the country with many companies downscaling their workforce to keep the lights on.

How to Check Shortlisted Candidates

The Agency asked applicants to visit odpp.go.ke, or the ODPP Office Notice Boards at Nairobi Headquarters as well as county offices, to check the full list of shortlisted candidates.

While on the ODPP website, visitors are advised to toggle to the careers section and then click on the Shortlisted Candidates hyperlink. The list with all the names will then load up.

On the downloadable PDF, visitors will see the names of the shortlisted candidates, interview schedules showing the venue, time and date for the interview as well as documents the interviewees are expected to carry.

"Interviews for the shortlisted candidates will be conducted from February 7 to February 31, 2024, at the Prosecution Training Institute in Loresho as well as the 19th floor of the NSSF building in Nairobi," read the notice in part.
