The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health on Wednesday probed Murang'a High School over claims of embezzling funds from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Led by the Vice Chairperson and Chuka Member of Parliament Patrick Munene, the committee toured the school's dispensary which serves students and staff members.
"The committee addressed concerns regarding a significant increase in claims, attributing it to a fee revision from Ksh 500 to Ksh 1000," read part of a statement from Parliament.
However, the school management distanced itself from any fraudulent activity.
According to the MPs, a few of the officials from school facilities colluded with rogue NHIF employees to misappropriate funds from the NHIF.
The investigation, as explained by the MPs, was extensive covering facilities in two counties accused of making fraudulent claims to the NHIF.
Murang'a High School's dispensary was among the facilities singled out for suspected financial malpractices.
In Kirinyaga, the team probed two Afya Bora Hospitals during which the committee vice chairperson questioned the management about loopholes in their claims.
Per reports, the hospitals allegedly conducted 22 surgeries in a day raising questions about the authenticity of the reports.
"It was noted that the facilities did not meet all the requirements for a Level Four hospital, prompting questions about the licensing process by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board," the statement read in parts.
The proprietor revealed that he had fired 98 employees due to unpaid money by the NHIF. He also denied any of the accusations from the MPs.
Multiple health facilities across the country have been accused of being part of an elaborate scheme to defraud the national health kitty.
In 2023, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha put eight hospitals accused of being part of a multi-billion scandal on notice warning that the government would put out all stops to crack down on corruption.
At the time, CS Nakhumicha called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to conduct investigations on the said hospitals and their proprietors.
