The owner of the gas filling plant in Embakasi through his lawyer, on Saturday, for the first time spoke out on the Thursday explosion that culminated in 3 deaths and the injury of more than 300 people.

Speaking to the press, the lawyer claimed that his client only runs a garage and not a refilling station as alleged by the press. He further argued that the allegations had deeply affected his client who Kenyans believe is responsible for the incident.

The owner also condoled with the victims' families. The lawyer argued that his client was also a victim in the whole saga, since in his opinion, was already being crucified in the court of public opinion without his side of his story being heard.

"I wish to state that my client refutes all the incorrect allegations which have been aired and published in the media, pointing fingers at him for being responsible for the unfortunate incident," the lawyer stated.

The lawyer further remarked that no one had reached out to his client to verify the information published adding that the false allegations had tarnished his reputation.

Additionally, the owner through his lawyer stated that the vehicle which caused the accident was trespassing on his territory and was working tirelessly to track down its owner.

The owner also noted that he was willing to work with the police to ensure anyone responsible is held culpable.

"My client is not in hiding, he is available and within the public and has been in touch with the police," the lawyer stated.

According to the lawyer, his client had applied for a licence to operate a gas-filling plant in 2023 but the request was denied. The owner who works as an importer says it was during this juncture that he halted all plans to set up the filling plant.

Conclusively, the lawyer issued a warning to the media directing various publications from publishing or airing information without verification.

"Our client requests that the media refrain from publishing any unverified and alarming statements. We call upon the public especially the media to allow the police to conduct their investigations," the lawyer stated.

These remarks came after President William Ruto ordered the arrest of all persons who approved the setting up of the plant.

Meanwhile, all government institutions responsible are on the spot for allowing unscrupulous traders to set up unsafe gas filling plants.
