The Road Safety Association of Kenya and the Motorists Association of Kenya on Saturday called for the disbandment of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Speaking in the aftermath of a tragic accident along the Busia-Eldoret highway, the Motorists Association of Kenya chairman Peter Murima called for redelegation of duties, stating that NTSA has failed to execute its mandate.

"NTSA is biting what it cannot be able to chew. Why don't they remain with revenue collection, and transfer road safety measures to other agencies," stated Murima.

The official further alleged that even vehicle inspections were no longer being carried out, putting more travellers at risk.

According to him, if NTSA mandates could be revised and road safety left to a single entity, road safety will improve drastically.

While visiting victims of road accidents in Machokos, the Road Safety Association of Kenya chairman, David Kiarie also backed the calls to have NTSA disbanded.

“People are not going to die and we are silent. We are the people who formed NTSA. The time for asking NTSA to be disbanded is now because they are not doing their work,” Kiarie noted.

Kiarie claimed that the Authority had failed to effectively execute its constitutional mandate, pointing fingers at the urgency over the loss of lives on the road.

The two lobby groups urged the government to bring back the same measures it implemented years back when NTSA's current duties were held by the National Road Safety Council.

Currently, NTSA is mandated with the task of planning, managing and regulating the road transport sector.

With this, the authority must ensure the provision of safe, reliable and efficient road transport.

Before the formation of the body, the above mandates were carried out by different bodies including the National Police Service (NPS).
