The Ministry of Health moved swiftly to schedule a meeting in an effort to avert a planned strike by health workers slated to take effect in seven days.

Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, stated in a press release that she convened a meeting with representatives from the health workers unions on Tuesday to address issues between the parties.

She further noted that the Ministry was willing to listen to the medics and reach an agreement.

"Acknowledging the concerns raised by the unions, PS Muthoni expressed a genuine commitment to resolving challenges through meaningful engagement and cooperation, reaffirming the Ministry's dedication to prioritizing the well-being of healthcare workers," a statement shared by the Ministry of Health showed.

"She emphasized the Ministry's willingness to listen to grievances and suggestions, aiming to find mutually beneficial solutions."

She further indicated that the meeting was aimed at building a harmonious relationship with health unions.

On Monday, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) issued a seven-day notice intending to commence its nationwide strike. The doctors planned to kick off the strike on Sunday, March 9.

The doctors expressed their frustration over the absence of promotions for medical staff and the delay in the placement of medical interns who have already graduated.

Additionally, they voiced concern that the proposed Social Healthcare Insurance Fund (SHIF) did not include them in medical coverage and sought assurances from the state regarding their inclusion.

“We have met today as the National Advisory Committee Council and we have agreed to do our nationwide strike starting Sunday next week,” explained KMPDU Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah.

On Sunday, the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) stated  that if the doctor's issues were not solved they would join them in downing the tools, a move that may paralyse the health sector.

It is, however, not clear whether the meeting between the representatives and the ministry successfully averted the looming strike.
