The Ministry of Health has embarked on a new technology that is aiding the country in eradicating the spread of Malaria disease.
In its Status Report for the State Department as of December 2023, the Ministry headed by CS Susan Nakhumicha, indicated that it has implemented a new technology identified as Larval Source Management (LSM).
The technology uses drones to spray areas infected by mosquitoes to reduce the transmission rate.
To that end, the Ministry launched the establishment of an independent body with a mandate to carry out quality of care accreditation.
"Kick-starting the establishment of an independent body with a mandate to carry out quality of care accreditation of health facilities in Kenya.
"Implementation of Larval Source Management (LSM) in 8 counties and spraying using drones," the report indicated.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Larval Source Management is the targeted management of mosquito breeding sites to the number of mosquito larvae and pupae.
"It is recommended as a supplementary vector control measure and should not be used to replace core interventions," WHO advised.
According to Forbes, Malaria is among the top killers worldwide accounting for 620,000 deaths every year, 90 per cent of which occur in Africa.
It is estimated that 241 million people across the globe contract the disease every year with experts fearing that it could culminate into a health crisis.
"It is heartbreaking and unacceptable that almost half a million children die of malaria every year," Director of UNICEF Supply Division Leila Pakkala told the outlet.
