Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata on Monday, April 1, exposed a three-man gang which has been terrorising residents in the region.

The governor revealed that the gang was notorious for breaking into various houses in Gikambura, Kikuyu Kiambu County.

He added that the thugs had stolen valuable property and car parts from various homesteads.

Governor Kang'ata shared a 15-second video showing one of the thugs sneaking into one of the homesteads at night. He also shared a photo of one of the suspects.

Following the robbery, the governor asked for information from members of the public which will be used to bring the culprits to book. Kang'ata further announced a reward for anyone who will give information that will lead to the trio's arrest.

"These two guys are part of a three-man gang that does burglary into various counties. If you know them, text 0713 902 656. There will be a reward," he stated.

Governor Kang'ata has used his platform to appeal for help after several instances of theft. In January, he also released CCTV footage of a woman stealing a laptop at the Murang'a County Level 5 Hospital.

Another incident of petty theft at the hospital was recorded in October 2023. In CCTV footage shared by the governor, the suspect was seen dragging a chair from the exit.

However, his pleas have not always been well received. Kenyans have in the past advised him to avoid taking the easier route and work with security agencies to shore up security in the county.

Data shared by the Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) from 2023 ranked Kiambu among the top three counties where crime is most prevalent.

Kiambu, Meru and Nairobi were listed as the counties with the highest crime rates.

Murang'a on the other hand, was ranked among the top ten with a total of 2,696 crime cases reported.

"Offences against persons, stealing and offences against morality jointly accounted for more than half of total crimes reported to the police in 2022," read part of the report.
