The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has tweaked its particulars for the upcoming nationwide recruitment exercise slated for between April 15 and April 19 this year.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, April 2, the service explained that the venue changes affect two counties, Uasin Gishu and Narok.

In Uasin Gishu, one of the venues was to be 64 Stadium but now it will be Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

For those in Narok, the recruitment was moved to Maasai Mara University Ground from William Ole Ntimama Stadium.

"Further to the earlier advertisement for recruitment of rangers dated March 19, 2024, the Service wishes to bring to the attention of the General Public the following changes in recruitment centres for the affected counties. All other details contained in the earlier advert remain unchanged," read the notice in part.

In an earlier notice, KWS announced that it was seeking to recruit 1,500 cadets (assistant warden 1) and rangers.

The vacancies were divided into two, the 150 cadets and 1,350 rangers for a specialised training before deployment across the country.

“KWS operates in remote environments and seeks to recruit 1,500 young and dynamic individuals as Cadets (Assistant Warden I) - 150 and Rangers – 1,350 who can endure the conditions for training and deployment to various conservation areas in response to the wildlife protection challenges currently being experienced in the country in a phased approach,” the recruitment notice read in part.

Requirements

In its advertisement, KWS listed several requirements for the ranger position.

Applicants should be Kenyan citizens with an identification card or passport, they must have scored a minimum of D (plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and should be aged between 18 and 26 years.

Other requirements were physical and medical fitness, no criminal record and readiness to undergo a 6-month paramilitary training.

Public Service CS Moses Kuria, however, took an issue with KWS decision to hire directly without giving preference to National Youth Service graduates.

"National Youth Service (NYS) graduates who meet the above requirements are encouraged to apply," the initial advertisement read in part.

Kuria argued that the service should prioritise hiring individuals who have undergone National Youth Service (NYS) training.

He explained that the President had directed several government agencies including Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service (NYS) to fill 80 per cent of their positions with NYS recruits.
