A recent report by Timely Kenya released on Tuesday, April 1, highlighted that nominated Members of Parliament affiliated with the Azimio La Umoja Coalition have emerged as top performers, surpassing their counterparts in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, particularly in the National Assembly, with a tie noted in the Senate.

The findings of the survey, conducted between 2023 and March 2024, highlighted the performance of nominated opposition lawmakers, despite facing numerical disadvantages in both the National Assembly and the Senate.

According to the report, Azimio MPs were rated at 61 per cent, while their Kenya Kwanza counterparts polled at 39 per cent in the National Assembly.

Former Minority Leader John Mbadi, Irene Mayaka, Dorothy Muthoni, Jackson Kosgei, Umulkher Harun, Sabina Chege, and Suleka Hulbale were identified as top performers, with Mbadi leading the pack at 52 per cent.

The pollster attributed the success of Chege and Mbadi to their key roles in sponsoring significant bills such as the Cancer Prevention Bill 2023 and the Public Finance Management Act 2023.

Moreover, the report highlighted the contributions of Nominated MPs Mayaka, Muthoni, and Kosgei, who were commended for sponsoring statements and motions before the House, thereby further solidifying their performance ratings.

However, the Senate saw a tie in performance ratings between nominated senators from the opposing sides.

Notably, nominated senators who excelled in the poll included Hamida Kibwana, Tabitha Mutinda, Gloria Orwoba, Beth Syengo, Essy Okenyuri, Catherine Mumma, Miraj Abdulrahaman, and Crystal Asige.

On the contrary, senators such as Raphael Chimera, Beatrice Oyomo, Margret Kamar, George Mbugua, Hezena Lemaletian, and Joyce Korir ranked poorly in the opinion poll.

The report also shed light on the notable bills sponsored by the nominated senators, underscoring their commitment to addressing critical issues affecting the nation.

Bills such as the E-Health Bill 2023, Labour Migration and Management Bill 2023, Digital Literacy Opportunities Bill 2024, and the Maternal Bill 2023 were mentioned among others.

During the period under review, nominated MPs demonstrated their legislative prowess by presenting a total of 31 statements, 21 motions, 9 petitions, and 5 bills to the August House.

Similarly, in the Senate, nominated Senators exhibited their commitment to legislative responsibilities by presenting a staggering 287 statements, moving 88 motions, filing 19 petitions, and introducing 11 bills.
