The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) on Wednesday, April 10, announced that the government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private company to advance sustainable forest conservation.

According to a statement by KFS, the company was chosen due to its dedication to creating and funding forest conservation measures.

Additionally, the company was commended for executing ecosystem restoration initiatives.

As such, the private company will now enhance forest restoration efforts through climate technology funding as well as facilitating investments in nature.

“This agreement strengthens an impactful partnership leveraging our combined strengths to source and structure forest investments that generate financial returns but also contribute to climate-positive and improved conservation outcomes,” KFS noted in a statement.

It was noted that the company had already shown its dedication to conserving Kenyan forests by creating an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology which detects imminent threats to Kenyan forests.

The MoU comes at a time when the national government is seeking partners to ensure that Kenya plants 15 billion trees by 2032.

KFS's partnership with the private company will not only help restore Kenya’s forest cover but also impact local communities bordering forests and protected areas.

“Our MoU is not limited to technical expertise but extends to comprehensive financial support, demonstrating our commitment to ensuring the success of KFS's overall strategic objectives,” the company explained.

In that regard, the company will use significant sums to provide support to build sustainable and innovative solutions in collaboration with KFS.

President William Ruto’s administration has prioritised measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on the ecosystem.

This has seen Kenya earn global recognition with the World Bank in March 2024, outlining this drive as one of the reasons to advance Kenya a development loan.
