Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday announced the formation of a new task force to lead the implementation of the Smart Transport System (STS)

Murkomen who was speaking during the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024 - 2028 in Nairobi, stated the new digital transport system will include the installation of speed cameras.

One major highway set to have the new Smart Transport System installed is the Mombasa - Malaba Highway which was pointed out as a hotspot for accidents.

According to the CS, the gazettement of the task force will be done in the next one week and will involve a multiagency team comprising several government institutions.

Among the sectors that will be involved in the formation of the task force include; the Judiciary, the County and National governments, the police force and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

"With that, we hope we will make even greater recommendations on the amendment of the Act," the CS stated.

"We are not just putting technology for enforcement of speed but also vehicular telematics, that technology is going to sort a lot of problems in this country," Murkomen added.

The CS further called on the relocation of all the markets that are near roads as one of the measures of curbing road carnage.

Traders were urged to utilise markets constructed by the national and county governments as a way of heeding the government's directive on the relocation of markets.

"We have promised under KeNHA that we have access roads that people can drive to the market because many Kenyans prefer purchasing their goods while still inside the car," Murkomen commented.

According to CS Murkomen, after the formation of the task force, the transport ministry will also come up with a comprehensive policy on road safety to deal with the surging cases of accidents.

"For the first time since 1963, this county will have the first comprehensive policy on road safety that mandates road designs integrated with road safety."
