Action Will be Taken Against Those Who Attack Police Officers - Boinnet Warns

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Friday announced that stern action will be taken against members of public who resort to attacking police officers after a crime has been committed.

Boinnet urged members of the public to follow the appropriate channels to air their grievances in crimes involving police officers.

“It is incumbent of all Kenyans to obey the law as it is and to channel any grievances they may have using available legal avenues instead of taking the law into their hands,” Boinnet stated.

The IG's warning came a day after University of Nairobi (UON) students leader Babu Owino stormed Kilimani Police Station to demand the release of a suspect.

Owino divulged that he had gone to demand the release of a UoN student who had been arrested and in the process lost his cool slapping one of the police officers.

He refuted earlier reports that he had gone to seek the release of Nairobi businessman Chris Obure, who had been arrested for misuse of his firearm.

"Police in Kilimani had arrested a comrade last evening on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. I mobilised several youth who accompanied me to the station, where we demanded that the right procedure be followed in apprehending our fellow student.

"However, officers on duty harassed us, which made me lose my cool and slap one of them. That is when I was arrested," Babu stated.

Still on Thursday, residents in Busia County torched Burinda AP post and a police vehicle after a female police officer shot and killed a boda-boda operator.

Police Spokesman George Kinoti, claimed that the locals also injured police officers during the chaos in Busia.
