Aden Duale Tables Bill Proposing Retirement Benefits for Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga

Former Chief Justice (CJ) Willy Mutunga is set to receive a hefty send-off package from the State after serving as the head of Judiciary for five years.

According to a Bill tabled in Parliament by Majority Leader Aden Duale, Dr Mutunga will be entitled to government security, medical insurance and diplomatic passports.

“A retired Chief Justice shall, during his or her lifetime, be entitled to a monthly pension equal to 80 percent of the monthly salary of the entitled person’s last monthly salary while in office,” part of the proposed law reads.

Dr Mutunga will also receive a saloon car and a four-wheel-drive vehicle (that will be replaced after every four years), which will be accompanied by a driver and fuel allowance through tax payer's money.

The former CJ's fuel allowance and pension only could amount to a monthly package of Sh1.2 Million.

Apart from that, Mutunga will be offered one secretary, one housekeeper, one senior support staff, one gardener and one cleaner to attend to his house.

The former CJ is now set to join retired Presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki who pocket more than Sh1 Million a month.

The two former Heads of State were allocated Sh74 Million in this year's budget as part of the benefits they will receive from the Government.

Dr Mutunga retired on June 16, 2016, and was replaced by Justice David Maraga.

The benefits awarded to retired State officers have sparked controversy with critics arguing that they are a heavy burden to tax payers.
