A group of Al-Shabaab militants on Monday night attacked Dabacity in Elwak, Mandera County and destroyed a Safaricom telecommunication mast.
Confirming the attack, County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia divulged that the militia group attacked at around 1:45am and overpowered five Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) deployed to guard the equipment.
“The five KPRs guarding the installation tried to resist but the weapons of the attackers were superior forcing them to run for safety,” Shisia stated.
The County Commissioner said that police had launched a manhunt for the group but said that the government had enough security officers to provide security to the locals.
On November 29, Police officers survived another Al-Shabaab attack on the Elwak-Dabacity road in Mandera.
General Service Unit (GSU) officers escaped unhurt after their vehicle ran over a roadside bomb.
Police claimed the bomb had been planted by suspected Al-Shabaab members targeting the officers.
The government has since deployed more police officers in the area to thwart more attacks by the group.
