Alco-blow Officers to be Stationed Outside Nairobi Bars

Nairobi county has partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to introduce breathalysers commonly known as alco-blow outside all bars.

County officers will now be stationed outside drinking joints to test alcohol level of drivers in a bid to curb drink-driving menace.

According to County Liquor Licensing Board chairman Vincent Shimoli, all drivers drinking in these joints will be subjected to the test.

“Once you are done with drinking and you have a car, you will be tested at the entrance,” Shimoli was quoted by the Star.

Those with private cars and whose alcohol level will exceed the minimum limit will be forced to use public service means to make their way home.

The Chairman divulged that their vehicles will then be towed to the County parking yard and the owners will have to pay for parking fees when collecting the cars.

The Transport Authority has been keen on implementing various measures to eliminate drink-driving, especially during the festive season.

Earlier in the month, NTSA announced that it would be exposing names of drivers who will be jumping bail or failing to attend court over minor traffic offences, by publishing their names in local dailies.

The body further warned that it had intensified its operations along various roads adding that more efforts would be channelled towards conducting drink-driving tests, speed checks and general inspection.

In the past week, the country has witnessed horrific accidents which have led to the loss of dozens of people including a Naivasha accident where 44 perished after a fuel tanker hit more than 10 vehicles and burst into flames.
