A suspect who was arrested for allegedly hacking the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) system and causing the loss of Sh4 Billion is surprisingly pleading with the public to assist him in posting his bail.
28-year old Alex Mutungi Mutuku, who is an IT expert, gave a hand written letter to his brother who had gone to visit him in jail, which was then published on his Facebook account.
The letter read as follows: “My bail ruling is coming up on the 28th of March and I’m praying and hoping for two things. One that I be granted bail and two, it’s a resonable amount. Now reasonable of course is relative to everyone and for me that’s 100k as that’s what I can afford. But I’m not the magistrate. All I can do is wait.
“On that note, I’m humbly asking each and everyone to help me however they can. It can be through a contribution, praying for me or even coming to give me moral support on 28th. if you would like to contribute towards my bail.”
Mutuku went ahead to post his M-Pesa and bank account details through which the public can send their contributions.
The suspect was arrested on March 8th among other suspects after continous efforts by the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SPCU) and the Flying Squad to pursue a group that had been staging cyber-attacks on banks and financial insitutions.
He was taken to court and charged with hacking KRA and causing the loss of a whopping Sh4 Billion.
Mutuku, however, did not plead guilty to the crime as cyber crime officers requested he be detained so that they would get more time to conduct their investigations and arrest other suspects.
Before his arrest, Mutuku was known to brag about his lavish life on Facebook which caused him to be the envy of his peers.
The IT expert has other pending electronic fraud cases including theft of Sh2.88 Million from the NIC bank.
Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi ordered Mutuku be detained until March 28.
