A group of agitated youth on Monday arrested the Kitui Deputy Director of Health and Sanitation after he allegedly failed to pay them allowances.
The youth dragged Alex Musoi from his office to Kitui Central Police Station, where he was ordered to present the list of persons meant to receive allowances by Tuesday.
Mr Musoi was accused of wrongfully awarding fellow county officials allowances meant to pay individuals who had attended the launch of a health facility service charter at Parkside Villa Hotel.
Kitui County National Youth Council chairman Aggrey Nzomo, claimed that Mr Musoi had instructed the event organisers, Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) not to pay the youth saying they had not been invited to the event.
“How can Mr Musoi order the CIC officers to only pay those who had been invited to the event and leave out the ones who have actually attended? This is unacceptable especially when it is perpetrated by public officers,” Mr Nzomo complained.
The youth, who claimed to be assisting their governor in the fight against corruption, insisted that other attendees who attended the event had also not been paid.
“We have also learned that a huge sum of money has been set aside to be paid to County Government officials yet they were not present when their boss Governor Julius Malombe addressed the congregation as he received the CIC report,” said the youth leader.
Mr Musoi, however, defended himself saying he did not receive any money that was not meant for him.
“I only signed the payment list to get my share. I did not instruct the CIC officers not to pay anyone as they were the ones giving out the allowances to participants,” he said.
This comes barely two weeks after Governor Julius Malombe fired five senior county officials after residents repeatedly accused them of abetting corruption in the County offices.
