Atheists in Kenya (AIK) have told President Uhuru Kenyatta that they will challenge his nomination of retired Archbishop Eliud Wabukhala, to be the new chairperson of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In a press statement issued by AIK chairman Harrison Mumia, the group claimed that Wabukhala's Christian values would make him “forgive the corrupt”.
“In the church, forgiveness is exalted as a virtue, and punishment is never emphasised. How will a person who believes that in the Bible’s message of forgiveness and who has preached this message for over 20 years to be good for EACC?” Mr Mumia posed.
The AIK chairman added, “We doubt he has the drive, stamina, experience, character and predisposition to take on politically sensitive and high voltage corruption cases in this country.”
The group went ahead and urged the Bishop to turn down the nomination so that he could remain relevant to the country and save his reputation.
Wabukhala's appointment was announced on Tuesday in Parliament by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi during a special sitting by MPs to discuss reforms on election laws.
Wabukhala is set to be vetted in parliament within 14 days from January 4th, 2017.
The position of EACC chairman fell vacant following the resignation of former anti-corruption boss Philip Kinisu on August 31.
Kinisu left office amid pressure after a company linked to him was mentioned to have received Sh35 Million in the infamous NYS scandal.
