Attorney General (AG) Githu Muigai has published a bill that will allow his office to perform the role of Cabinet Secretary and effectively hand over the reigns of power to over 22 institutions.
The Bill was necessitated after a court ruled that the AG could not manage the institutions because he did not have the powers of a CS.
With the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill - 2017, Prof. Muigai is seeking to have the "cabinet secretary" wording replaced by "attorney general" in 22 different Acts of parliament that created the institutions in question.
"Delete the words “Cabinet Secretary” wherever they appear and substitute thereof the word “Attorney General,” Prof Muigai implored in the Bill whose First Reading in the National Assembly will be on Tuesday afternoon when Parliament resumes session.
The Acts that stand to be changed include the Business Registration Service Act, the Limited Liability Partnerships Act, the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration Act, the Kenya School of Law Act and the Companies Act.
