Boda Boda Riders Announce Fight Against Nairobi County Gov't

Boda-boda riders in Nairobi have vowed to defy the recent orders issued by the County Government restricting their operations within the Central Business District (CBD).

In a meeting held at Uhuru Park, the riders said that they would go to the Court to seek an injunction on the stringent directive issued last week by County Secretary Gregory Mwakanongo.

According to their Chairman Kennedy Onyango, the Boda Boda Association was looking to raise Sh1 Million for hiring a lawyer to represent them in fighting the ban, that would deny them business in the Capital.

Last week, the City Government announced that all boda-boda operators were banned from ferrying passengers to and from the CBD with immediate effect.

In a statement, the County Secretary said that those found contravening the law would face a six-month jail term or incur a fine of Sh20,000.

“Pursuant to the provisions of the Traffic Act CAP 403 of 2014 of the Laws of the Republic of Kenya, the Nairobi City County Government wishes to inform all motorcycle (boda-boda) operators ferrying passengers to and from the Central Business District (CBD) that such activities have been banned with immediate effect. Any operator and passenger found contravening this law will be arrested for an offence punishable by hefty fines and long jail terms as provided for in the Traffic Act of 2014.” the statement read in part.

Despite the prohibition of boda-bodas from operating within the CBD, they have defiantly continued with business in the restricted area.
