Boinnet Orders Police to Stop Escorting Governors Using Chase Cars

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett has sent an urgent message directing police officers to immediately stop using chase cars to escort Governors from one place to another.

In the message, Boinett ordered all regional county commanders to ensure the directive is followed to the letter, adding that disciplinary action will be taken against any officer who goes against the order.

“The police headquarters has noted with a lot of concern that police vehicles and police officers are escorting county government officials across the country and sometimes clearing roads for them at the expense of inconveniencing other road users. This must never occur again,” the IG stated.

Boinett noted that besides the presidency, all other protocols regarding chase cars and escorts are done as directed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He further warned County Government officials against using the wrong side of the road as has earlier been witnessed.

The strict directives were issued after it emerged that the government had withdrawn the security details of Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Amason Kingi (Kilifi).

Addressing the press, six Coast ODM leaders gave Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery a two-day ultimatum to reinstate the Governors' aides, declaring that they would hold the government solely responsible for any "misfortune or security breaches".

Details of why Joho and Kingi's bodyguards were taken away remain scanty, but the move came after the two Governors dressed down President Kenyatta over development projects in the Coast region.
