One person was reportedly killed and four others sustained injuries after a bus said to have been carrying relatives of former Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo, was sprayed with bullets.
The bus was ambushed by suspected raiders at Tot area in Elgeyo Marakwet while transporting the body of Kimaiyo's cousin for burial.
According to County police commander Tom Odera, the driver of the 40-seater bus was stopped but sped off probably provoking the assailants to shoot.
He added that more officers were deployed to escort the mourners together with those injured during the incident.
"The action might have prompted the bandits to fire shots at the vehicle. We deployed another team of officers to escort the ambulance that was ferrying the injured to hospital," confirmed Odera.
The region has been grappling with frequent attacks and deteriorating levels of security which has led to the death of dozens of people.
On Saturday morning, unidentified attacked and killed Loyamarok Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kibet Cheretei and Tiaty parliamentary aspirant Pepee Kitambaa in Baringo County.
The two were in an entertainment joint in Marigat town when hooded assailants armed with an AK47 rifle and a machete attacked and shot them dead.
They then broke into the MCA's vehicle and took away a bag before setting the car on fire.
