Bus Involved in the Nakuru-Nairobi Road Crash that Killed 20 Was Stolen

Details have emerged indicating that the ill-fated bus that killed 20 people in a grisly road accident last Saturday at Soysambu area along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway had been reported stolen.

When he was arraigned in court yesterday, the owner of the bus, Mr Humphrey Mulindi, told the court that he had reported to the police that his bus registration number KCG 922 C had been stolen prior to the accident.

Mulindi was arraigned in court for allegedly allowing a defective bus to operate in a wrong route.

It also emerged that the bus in question did not have a valid licence.

However, the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) came to his defence, accusing the police of negligence.

Through their chairman Simon Kimutai, MOA argued out that before reaching Soysambu, the ill-fated bus passed through several police checkpoints in Kabete, Kikuyu, Uplands, Naivasha and Gilgil where police should have impounded the vehicle.

MOA has squarely blamed law enforcers for compromising the lives of the 20 victims who perished in the crash, accusing the police of turning the checkpoints into cash collection points.

Kimutai stated: "We are now calling for speedy investigations into the case and officials manning the highway to be held accountable since they were responsible and became negligent."

The case will be heard on August 23.
