Students from Gusii Institute of Technology in Kisii took to the streets, engaging police in running battles after a lorry carrying electricity poles lost control outside the school leading to the death of two people.
The two died after the polls fell on them, killing them on the spot. Two more people were injured in the accident and rushed to the hospital.
The angry locals and students closed off roads in protest, setting the lorry on fire. Police managed to save the lorry's driver who is said to be a police officer.
Police officers were forced to shoot into the air to disperse the demonstrators.
The Nation reports that two journalists were also injured during the scuffle.
