Chief Justice David Maraga Set to Announce Tough Rules in Corruption Cases

Kenyans implicated in corruption scandals are in for an uphill task in the corridors of justice following tough rules that are set to be unveiled by Chief Justice David Maraga.

Justice Maraga noted that due to the interest such cases attract, the regulations will ensure that once people are charged with economic crimes, they are set for conferencing within two days and hearings commence on a daily basis without adjournment.

“I am already taking active steps in the reorganisation of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division of the High Court and the Anti-Corruption courts presided over by the Magistrates,” the CJ said.

In a speech delivered by Deputy CJ Philemona Mwilu in Mombasa, Maraga divulged that the rules he is yet to launch will see the blame game in corruption cases come to a halt.

“We cannot continue blaming each other at the expense of the taxpayers and our citizens, [whom] we swore the oath of office to serve,” Maraga inferred.

The judiciary has been on the spot for delaying graft cases in the country.

He further urged lawyers to be ethical stating: “Kenya needs ethical lawyers who always keep the end of justice in mind and will never sacrifice the integrity of the legal system to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be.”

When Maraga was sworn into office, he assured President Uhuru Kenyatta that he would ensure cases at the judiciary are dealt with speedily.
