Chief Justice David Maraga Warns Politicians Against Intimidating the Courts in Announcing of Presidential Results

Chief Justice David Maraga has sent a stern warning to Opposition Chief Raila Odinga against intimidating the courts.

This came after members of the opposition, led by Odinga, warned the Court of Appeal against overturning a ruling that presidential results announced at constituency level should be final.

Maraga said politicians should steer clear of Judiciary affairs as a way of respecting its independence.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) appealed against High Court’s decision (that presidential results announced at constituency level should be final) and Maraga insisted that judges would not be intimidated to make biased rulings to satisfy political ambitions.

“Politicians, let the Judiciary do its work. We do not want statements that are meant to intimidate judicial officers.

"Judges and magistrates will not determine cases on what is said but based on the law and facts,” reiterated the CJ during the swearing-in of Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu as a member of the Judicial Service Commission.

Odinga questioned how IEBC officials at the central tallying centre would ascertain the credibility of results in far-flung areas, adding that the commission should have faith in the returning officers all constituencies.
