Co-operative University Student Commits Suicide Inside Hardy Police Station

A Co-operative University student died at a police station in Nairobi on Thursday after being arrested with several rolls of bhang.

Tony Munguti, a Fourth Year student, allegedly committed suicide inside Hardy police cells in Karen a few hours after his arrest.

According to the police, Munguti had been arrested for creating disturbance but was found in possession of 50 grammes of bhang leading to his detention.

Nairobi Police commandant Japheth Koome stated that the student killed himself using a sweater he was wearing.

“...He continued to be violent by kicking cell doors and grills. At 13.30 hours the cell door was opened to allow students to see him only to find his lifeless body dangling on a sweater tied on a door grill,” part of the police report read.

The body of the Bachelor of Commerce student was taken to City Mortuary awaiting a postmortem to be conducted

Confirming the incident, the University's acting Vice Chancellor Kamau Ngamau assured that investigations were being conducted to ascertain the cause of the sudden death.
