CORD Leaders Divided Over Endorsement of Nicholas Zani for Kwale Senate Seat

A dispute has emerged among CORD leaders in the Coastal region over who would take over the Kwale Senate seat following the demise of Boy Juma Boy.

On Thursday, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) endorsed Nicholas Zani, a brother to party acting Secretary General Agnes Zani, as Boy's replacement.

This was backed by among others Kwale Council of Imams and scholars led one Hamisi Banda who stated that Nicholas was the right person to take over the now vacant Senate seat.

“As leaders of Kwale, we have sat down and concluded that the only person who can replace Boy Juma Boy is Nicholas Zani. This is a democratic post that any Kwale resident has a right to go for. That is why we have asked Zani to take it up,” stated Banda.

A separate faction comprising of leaders from the neighbouring Mombasa County is said to be against Nicholas.

The disputing group has objected the quick endorsing of Zani's brother sparking a discord that has threatened the Opposition's unity in the region.

Nicholas vied for the seat in the 2013 General Election but emerged third behind the late Boy and former Matuga MP Chirau Mwakwere who is now eyeing the governor's seat.

Before the former Senator's death, Nicholas had already kicked off his campaign for the gubernatorial seat currently being occupied by Salim Mvurya who ditched ODM for Jubilee.
