Court Crushes IDPs' Hopes

Efforts by Internally Displaced Persons to get state compensation have yet again hit a snag, leaving 36,000 people dejected.

The IDPs from 1992 and 1997 election clashes had submitted a bid that if approved would have seen them receive Sh31.5 Billion cumulatively as compensation.

The High court on Tuesday rejected the bid and consequently, all access to the compensation.

High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola directed that they apply individually to get a chance at being compensated.

He further said that each of the persons who apply will have to prove that indeed they are displaced persons as a result of the violence.

The directive is seen to be arising from concerns that some of the people are not genuine.

This however, could potentially end up further frustrating genuine IDPs, most of whom can hardly afford lawyers to represent their cases on individual levels.

The quest for justice in a bid to reclaim lost livelihoods, continues for the displaced persons more than a decade later.
