Court Slams Women With Heavy Sentences for FGM

Three women from Marsabit County have been sentenced to different jail times for Female-genital-mutilation related crimes.

The women were charged for the different roles they played in the illegal practice, including performing the procedure and subjecting young girls to the practice.

The court ruled that two of the women- Bokayo Hussein alias Kura Dika and Halima Mohammed, serve three years behind bars for subjecting their daughters to the torture of FGM.

An additional punishment in form of a Sh200,000 fine, was set to each of the two women, failure to which they will serve one more year in prison.

This is after the two women pleaded guilty to forcing their daughters, aged eight and twelve years, into the practice.

The third woman Diramu Duba Kuli, was charged with circumcising the girls and sentenced to five years in jail and in addition, pay a fine of Sh200,000 which will cost her an additional year in jail, if not paid.

During the hearing, the prosecutor told the court that the circumcisor had been paid a fee of Sh 500 per girl to perform the act on August 1.

The area chief however got to know of the incident and took the matter to the police who arrested the trio on August 16th.

FGM is an outlawed practice in Kenya due to the dangerous and sometimes deadly effects.

The government and civil societies have, however, been grappling with the reality of some communities in the country holding on to the practice for its cultural values, most of the time endangering the lives of young girls.
